Introduction
The Communications Services Division with the Department of Sport, Culture and Heritage is seeking an experienced communications professional to fill their Public Affairs Specialist position.  

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be able to work standby and/or on call for evenings and weekends, on occasion.
  • Must be able to occasionally work out of town, including overnight stays.
  • Must have a valid class 5F driver’s license
Qualifications:
Essential:
 
  • A degree or diploma in communications plus extensive related experience in communications/advertising. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Extensive experience developing strategic communications plans.
  • Extensive experience in media relations and issues management.
  • Experience managing multiple communications projects and events within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze and problem solve in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with internal clients as well as external suppliers and/or partners.
  • Strong consultative skills.
  • Strong leadership skills. 
  • Extensive experience in preparing written communications such as news releases, speeches, advertising and digital communications.
  • Demonstrated experience using current communication trends and technologies.
  • Strong negotiating skills
 
Desired:
 
  • Knowledge of the public sector environment and issues that involve or affect the provincial government.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in French.
Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, this position works with departments and internal team members to deliver direct services regarding strategic communications planning, media relations, issues or crises management, emergency communications, creative development of marketing plans and digital communications, and news conference and event management. These strategies may range from one-time events to large-scale campaigns involving social media and various forms of paid and unpaid promotion over an extended time period involving several levels of government, the private sector and non-government organizations.
