Communications and Engagement is the central government division dedicated to engaging Manitobans in the work of government by delivering the message of government policy and programs to staff, the media and the public in dynamic, effective ways; advancing openness and transparency across government, and increasing engagement and participation in the decision-making process.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Post-secondary degree in political science, business administration, communications, public administration. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. 
  • Experience developing and editing a variety of communication materials, such as the news media in a public relations / media engagement environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with experience building effective working relationships, consulting and negotiating with critical stakeholders such as the news media, the public, government officials, educational institutions and/or student groups.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information through the use of sound judgment and political acumen. 
  • Ability to work with  legislation, policy, and data including researching, providing analysis and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills and experience assisting professionals to produce documents that convey complex, technical content in an easy to understand, creative manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to actively listen and convey ideas in a clear and concise manner.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and timelines in a fast paced, results driven environment.

Duties:
Reporting to the Manager of Media Engagement, Media Engagement Specialists play a central role in the government’s media engagement practice. The Unit is accountable for the effective engagement of the media, notably the Manitoba Legislature Press Gallery, providing support to the Premier, ministers and government officials at press conferences and events, in responding to media inquiries and in making announcements. Working closely with media relations and issues management staff in the Premier’s Office, the Unit plays a central role in ensuring open government and transparency through media engagement. Specialists are responsible for responding to media inquiries and work in a high-intensity, fast-paced role that requires precision, attention to detail, political acuity and strong interpersonal skills.
