Sustainable Development is seeking a qualified individual to fill a term Park Planner (KP2)  position in Winnipeg. The Planning and Protected Areas section is responsible for the strategic direction of the Manitoba Provincial Park System, as well as establishing both new and revised park boundaries, classifications, primary park goals and objectives, and Land Use Categories.  The section also prepares park management plans, leads the Ecological Reserves program, and manages the Canadian Heritage Rivers program in Manitoba.  Through the Protected Areas Initiative, the section is responsible for establishing a network of protected areas that conserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity in all ecoregions across the province.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence
  • Must be willing and able to travel with occasional overnight accommodation and to remote locations
  • Must be willing and able to work extended hours, as required

Qualifications:

Essential:
 
  • Graduation from a natural resources management, environmental science, landscape planning, conservation biology, ecosystem management program or a closely related field with directly-related work experience in a land use or park planning position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Experience in planning and coordinating the selection and securing of lands for legal designation
  • Experience developing management plans
  • Experience developing policies related to ecosystem management, recreation management, natural resource use, and/or related land use
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholder groups as well as is in a team environment
  • Ability to develop and conduct consultation processes with First Nations
  • Strong verbal communication skills with experience making presentations to diverse audiences
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience using Microsoft office programs or similar computer software, as well as experience using GIS applications (ArcView, ArcGIS )
 
Desired:
 
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Heritage Rivers System
  • Knowledge of protected areas science including the approach used in Manitoba regarding establishment of protected areas and how they relate to international requirements.

Duties:

The Park Planner is responsible for leading park planning processes on a province-wide basis that include new park establishment, park management plans, development of park management agreements with First Nations, and the development or revision of policy, regulations, and projects to fulfil specific land use and ecosystem, recreation and visitor management within specific parks.  The incumbent also leads the implementation of the Canadian Heritage Rivers System in Manitoba.
