Consider this excellent opportunity with the Manitoba government at the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC), located 45 minutes west of Winnipeg in the City of Portage la Prairie. The Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC), a branch of the Department of Families, is an accredited facility providing residential care, supervision and developmental habilitation for adults with intellectual disabilities. On-site interdisciplinary teams provide a wide range of services to residents to ensure that every individual's needs are met and that his/her quality of life is enhanced.

Qualifications:

Essential:
  • University degree in social sciences (Psychology, sociology or a related field of study) or a suitable combination of training and experience
  • Experience working with persons with intellectual disabilities
  • Experience with planning, implementing and evaluating comprehensive life skills programs
  • Experience providing leadership, coaching and direction
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work respectfully with residents, co-workers, families and all members of the interdisciplinary team and community recipients
  • Strong verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with different levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of current trends in the field of intellectual disabilities
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Word)
 
Desired:
  • Experience in developing and delivering educational information/training individually or in groups
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health and dual diagnosis

Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Residential Coordinator and in consultation with respective interdisciplinary team members, the incumbent will work directly with residents of the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) to identify and facilitate opportunities to learn and apply activities of daily living skills including socialization, civic awareness, literacy, life skills, environment, health and safety, transportation, recreation, leisure and community knowledge that meet their needs, interests, and desires as expressed in the residents' Individual Plan (IP). The incumbent is a member of an interdisciplinary team, which designs programs and creates opportunities that foster a sense of independence while identifying, developing and providing the support that are needed for this to be achieved. The incumbent will assist the residents to conceptualize and relate to new life experiences by fostering decision making skills towards increased independence.
