The Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth (MACY) is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent of government. The Manitoba Advocate’s statutory mandate includes representing the rights, interests, and viewpoints of children, youth, and young adults receiving any designated or reviewable services as described under The Advocate for Children and Youth Act. The Manitoba Advocate also reviews and reports upon the standards and quality of those reviewable and designated services provided to children, youth, and young adults who have died, to educate the public and to enhance the safety and well-being of Manitoba children, youth, and young adults.

Duties:
As directed or required by the Manitoba Advocate or designate, the incumbent represents the rights of, and acts as an advocate on behalf of any child, youth, or young adult. Reporting to the Program Manager, Investigations and Child Death Reviews, as designated by the Manitoba Advocate, the incumbent reviews the services provided to children, youth, or young adults who, at the time of their death or in the year that preceded the death, received services from any reviewable services as described under The Advocate for Children and Youth Act. Following a review, the Investigator may be directed to prepare an investigation on behalf of the Manitoba Advocate reviewing the services which were delivered to the child, youth, young adult, or their family. Investigations evaluate the circumstances surrounding the death and may recommend formal changes to the standards, policies, regulations, or practices in order to improve the effectiveness and responsiveness of services and to reduce the likelihood of a death occurring in similar circumstances. The incumbent participates in public education activities as assigned by the Manitoba Advocate or designate to bring awareness to the community regarding the principles and mandate under which these reviews will be conducted, or more generally, to the work of the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth.
Competitive Process: The competition will include, in addition to a board interview(s), a comprehensive written assessment. The successful candidate will be subject to a six (6) month probationary period.
