Introduction
The Archaeological Assessment Services Unit (AASU) within Manitoba Sport, Culture and Heritage is responsible for administering portions of the Heritage Resources Act. Our unique contribution is to ensure that heritage resources, wherever their original locations throughout Manitoba, are managed in accordance with the provisions of The Act. The AASU reviews a variety of development proposals and works with departments, developers, industry and their consultants to develop terms of reference for impact assessments involving heritage resources. The AASU also conducts site inspections and responds to archaeological emergencies as required.  The AASU is seeking to expand its team with additional highly skilled Impact Assessment Archaeologists (3 Full-Time Regular positions and 1 Full -Time Term position).

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Class 5F driver's license.
  • Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba, including remote areas and may include overnight stays. 
  • Must be able to work outside of regular office hours, as required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain valid first aid training certification. 
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology/archaeology or equivalent.  Master's degree in Archaeology or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience conducting field and laboratory work in Canadian Pre-Contact and Historic Archaeology.
  • Experience in undertaking archaeological impact assessment, monitoring and/or mitigation field projects.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of industry and government stakeholders in an environment of competing priorities.
  • Experience managing heritage resource issues, processes and practices in Canada.
  • Experience using Microsoft (MS) Office Suite (including MS Outlook, Word, Excel) or equivalent, and GPS/GIS software applications to conduct basic analyses to produce reports and presentations.
  • Strong written communication skills with experience preparing, editing, and formatting technical reports, presentations, and correspondence.
  • Ability to work under deadline and manage frequent interruptions.

Desired:
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities or culturally sensitive issues or materials in a confidential and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of heritage resource legislation in a Canadian jurisdiction and/or Manitoba Heritage Resources Act (1986).
Duties:
Reporting to the Senior Impact Assessment Archaeologist, the incumbent screens incoming proposals to assess potential impact on archaeological resources to identify whether a heritage resources impact assessment (HRIA) needs to be undertaken prior to development proceeding, in accordance with provisions under The Heritage Resources Act. The position liaises with project proponents to ensure heritage requirements are met, conducts project monitoring and reviews HRIA reports submitted by consultants for development clearance. Planning and conducting field work, recording sites and artifact analysis resulting from field work, maintaining archaeological site records and special assignments are required on an as need basis.
