Introduction
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates unexpected deaths and cases when the cause of death is not immediately known or when the death is the result of violence due to an accident, suicide, or homicide. The Manitoba Fatality Inquiries Act gives the Chief Medical Examiner the responsibility for the investigation of all unexpected and violent deaths occurring in the Province. Medical doctors throughout Manitoba are appointed as Medical Examiners and carry out investigations on behalf of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office. They are assisted in their investigation by medical examiner investigators or police officers. To be considered for this competition you must submit an application form.   • Ability to travel within the designated area, be available for rotating work shifts (covering the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), handle stand-by designation (5:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. and weekends) and respond to call-in situations in a timely manner
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Must be a Registered Nurse, with either a Bachelor of Nursing degree or a Diploma in Nursing from one of the former recognized schools of nursing, including significant acute care experience in one or more: emergency, ICU, medicine, surgery, pediatrics or obstetrics
  • Experience interviewing and supporting individuals who are experiencing difficult and stressful situations
  • Excellent analytical ability
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet conflicting deadlines
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and Outlook), using the internet, or equivalent applications

Desired:
  • Experience conducting investigations
  • Knowledge of The Fatality Inquiries and Vital Statistics Acts
  • Experience in investigative procedures or medico-legal death investigations
Duties:
Under the direction of the Director or a Provincial Medical Examiner, the incumbent will be responsible to investigate circumstances surrounding sudden and violent deaths in the City of Winnipeg and periphery including rural Manitoba.  This will involve liaison with police and physicians, obtaining medical history and circumstances, preparing complex reports, collecting evidence, providing direction in the handling of bodies, researching and preparing summaries, interviewing pertinent professionals, conducting telephone interviews, transporting biological specimens, supporting individuals and families through periods of stress, conducting presentations to related disciplines, assisting in program planning, taking photographs and consulting with Medical Examiners in order to determine the status of each case.  Prepares necessary reports and performs other related duties.
