Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be eligible for membership in the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists with Professional Agrologist designation.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license, with the ability to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba.
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Bachelor of Science in Agriculture or similar related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience and expertise in intergrated Weed Management including the detection, identification, and management of weeds in field crops.
  • Experience and expertise with pesticides (herbicide, insecticide and fungicide) application in an agricultural setting.
  • Experience enforcing acts or regulations related to the agricultural industry.
  • Experience in program development, planning and evaluation.
  • Ability to independently manage projects and undertake necessary research and information gathering to keep current on issues/trends in the industry.    
  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate in a multidisciplinary team with internal and external stakeholders.   
  • Excellent verbal  communication skills with the ability to effectively prepare and deliver training presentations. 
  • Excellent written communication skills.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
Desired:
  • Masters of Science in Agriculture or similar related discipline.
Duties:
The Weed Specialist provides provincial leadership and coordination in weed related issues. The Weed Specialist develops and delivers programming in weed management that provides advice and support to primary agricultural producers in making decisions regarding science based profitable, productive and environmentally sustainable weed management. The Weed Specialist is also responsible for ensuring The Noxious Weeds Act is enforced and to that end works closely with the Branch Director and the Manitoba Weed Supervisors Association. The Weed Specialist develops and maintains links with industry, academia, federal and provincial governments in areas of weed management.
