Introduction
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is a special operating agency of the Manitoba government performing a critical role in ensuring and maintaining Manitoba's public safety. The overall mission is to safe guard both persons and property from fire and life safety hazards through education, investigation, emergency response and code application.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Ability to travel throughout Manitoba and occasionally throughout Canada and internationally for extended periods of time
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment 
  • Ability to perform the physical duties of the position including lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing, working in confined spaces, at heights and within a variance of ambient temperatures
  • Must hold and maintain a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work alone  
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Certification as a commercial and industrial gas fitter ("A" License) in the Province of Manitoba; or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience
  • Extensive related experience in the design, installation, maintenance and/or service of gas and oil burning equipment
  • Knowledge of the acts, codes and regulations governing the installation, operation and inspection of gas and oil burning equipment
  • Knowledge of effective investigation and inspection techniques and procedures
  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional and courteous working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Effective written communication skills, with the ability to complete accurate and complete inspection reports, technical reports, and other formal correspondence
  • Ability to work with minimum day-to-day supervision, and exercise sound judgement and personal initiative
  • Effective verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical information
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
 
Desired:
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of the Office of the Fire Commissioner, its mandate, and the programs and services it provides to the public
Duties:
Reporting to the Program Manager, the Inspector, Gas and Oil is responsible for performing field inspections of new and existing gas and oil burning equipment across Manitoba to ensure compliance with the requirements of various provincial legislation and regulations. The position further verifies the licensing and certification requirements of trade personnel.
