Introduction
The Government Greenhouse, located behind the Legislative Building at 446 Assiniboine Avenue, spans 32 acres and includes five greenhouses. The branch oversees the cultivation of annual plants for the site and supplies various properties across the province. We maintain the grounds by mowing and trimming the lawn, tending to 70 flower beds, sweeping steps, picking up litter, and emptying garbage cans. We also plant, prune, and care for trees, shrubs, and perennial beds, as well as maintain two fountains. In winter, we handle snow removal, clearing steps and sidewalks around the Legislative Building, sanding walkways and parking lots, and using loaders and skid steers to clear the Legislative parking lot and Government House.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Records Check, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check
- Must be able and willing to work overtime as required
- Must have a Certification in pesticides and herbicides application or be able to obtain within six months of employment commencement
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including heavy lifting, pushing and pulling, crouching, and climbing
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Experience operating equipment at commercial facilities, including grass mowers, tillers, gardening tools, snow removal equipment, and other related machinery. A combination of experience and training may be considered.
- Experience in snow and ice removal from roads, parking lots, sidewalks, building entrances and other areas as required.
- Experience in grounds maintenance, including lawn care, tree care, and flower garden upkeep.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, procedures, and relevant safety policies.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently and set priorities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with contractors, clients and the general public.
Desired:
- Experience performing routine maintenance on equipment, including oil changes, spark plug replacements, checking fluid levels, and tire pressure monitoring.
Duties:
Under the general supervision of the Grounds Manager, the incumbent performs ground maintenance at the Legislative Grounds including Memorial Park, Government House and other owned properties in District One. The position will receive direction and instruction from the Grounds Maintenance 2 and Grounds Maintenance 3 positions with respect to grounds maintenance tasks.
