Introduction
The Fisheries Branch is seeking to fill permanent, full-time, Hatchery Technician positions at the Whiteshell Fish Hatchery.

Bunkhouse Accommodations may be available. 

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Intermediate-Full class 5 licence (or equivalent)
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends, statutory holidays and overtime. 
  • Must be able to work on or around water, for extended periods of time in various weather conditions. 
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties and responsibilities of the position, including (but not limited to) lifting 25kg, bending, looking down for extended periods of time, working in tight spaces, standing for long periods of time and have good manual dexterity. 
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Post-secondary education in biological or natural sciences or a combination of education/training and experience working with fish may be considered.
  • Experience handling and working with live fish in Canada in a recreational, commercial, or academic environment. 
  • Knowledge of biosecurity procedures including operating and maintaining equipment. 
  • Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to keep full and detailed records with consistent accuracy. 
  • Experience recording, maintaining, and analysing data.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Effective verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
Desired:
  • A Class 3 driver's licence and air brake endorsement.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various small engine and electric equipment, as well as boats/watercrafts. 
  • A valid Pleasure Watercraft Operator Licence.
  • Experience backing up and hauling trailers/boats. 
Duties:
Reporting to the Whiteshell Fish Hatchery Manager, the Hatchery Technicians are responsible for: 1) the daily operational oversight and organization of fish husbandry at the Whiteshell Hatchery; 2) fish health/ management activities at the facility; 3) basic maintenance of infrastructure and operations of the Whiteshell Hatchery potable and geothermal water systems; 4) determination of fish inventories; 5) fabrication and repair of some equipment; and 6) organization, loading, distribution and reporting for up to 500, 000 trout (various life stages) and ~ 10 million walleye fry produced at the hatchery to stocking sites across the Province.
