Introduction
The forestry field services program within Forestry and Peatlands Branch is seeking qualified and skilled individuals to fill forestry operations technician positions based out of Winnipeg.  The forestry field services program delivers multiple forest surveys - collecting inventory, silvicultural, forest health and urban forestry data through a variety of forest mensuration techniques and methodologies. Data collected is utilized by multiple sources at the branch, department, and national levels.  Forestry and Peatlands Branch is responsible for sustainably managing Manitoba’s forests and works under legislation such as The Forest Act and The Forest Health Protection Act.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent from another province. 
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats, or rotary or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime when required and work out-of-town for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents.
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties of the position which require moderate physical effort including carrying equipment such as chainsaws and forestry samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Post-secondary education in forestry, natural resource management or other environmental science discipline.  An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Field experience with forest inventory, silviculture, urban forestry and/or forest health surveys.
  • Experience collecting, reviewing and compiling data.
  • Experience driving a variety of vehicles, such as trucks, vans and/or all terrain vehicles, including towing trailers over a variety of terrain, such as paved highways, gravel roads, and forestry roads/trails.
  • Experience supervising staff including providing training, guidance, and performance management.
  • Able to work independently with strong organizational skill to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers and the public.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
Desired:
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ArcGIS and/or ArcPro, and ArcGIS online.
Duties:
The forestry operations technician (operations technician) supervises a team of seasonal resource technicians in the delivery of Forestry and Peatlands field services program.  Under the direction of senior forestry staff, the forestry operations technician assists in the annual preparation of forestry surveys and provides on-site supervision for forestry survey programs including but not limited to forest inventory, silviculture, Dutch elm disease (DED) management, forest health and other forest management programs and research projects. The operations technician work includes supervising crews of seasonal resource technicians in data collection, safe work practices and data quality. Forestry operations technicians assist in developing field work schedules and in the creating, updating and maintenance of survey procedures and in compiling and analysis of the technical data collected for the field program and are responsible for training seasonal staff on forestry surveys.
