Introduction
Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure in running a province-wide competition to fill a number of Highway Construction Technician (EA4) positions in the following locations (Winnipeg, Steinbach, Carman, Arborg, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Boissevain, Birtle, Thompson, The Pas, Ashern and Dauphin). Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess and maintain a valid Full Class 5F Manitoba Driver's licence.
- Must have the ability to travel (day or night conditions) within the province (by air or land).
- Must be able to work extended hours or irregular hours such as shift work, weekends, evenings, involving overnight stays (i.e. hotel/motel or possibly in a camp environment).
- Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of the position such as prolonged sitting, medium lifting (carrying up to 25 kg), walking (on possible uneven surfaces), wearing of Personal Protective Equipment and working under possible adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.).
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or completion of the Department Level 2 training courses and Survey 3. Other suitable education and experience may be considered.
- Inspection experience working in all aspects of roadway construction (including but not limited to, grade, base, asphalt and/or concrete paving projects).
- Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Ability to work effectively independently.
- Effective time management and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of construction specifications, procedures and guidelines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to plan and organize staff to meet project objectives.
- Clear and concise written communication skills when completing field notes, portions of construction orders/tenders, work sheets and/or reports.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Duties:
The Highway Construction Technician (HCT) has Lead Hand responsibility for department staff on a project site. The HCT performs advanced technical and engineering related functions. The HCT uses judgment in applying Departmental standards, specifications, policies and procedures to make independent decisions within scope of knowledge and experience on project sites, ensuring sound construction and survey practices are followed. The HCT may also provide hour-to-hour direction and training to department staff on project sites.
