Candidates who do not meet all essential criteria may be considered on an undersill basis at a commensurate rate of pay. The IG1 salary is $68,787.00 - $88,702.00.

Introduction
Workplace Safety and Health enforces The Workplace Safety and Health Act and its associated regulations in order to protect the safety and health of workers in Manitoba.  Workplace Safety and Health's Inspection and investigation activity focuses on improving legislative compliance in order to eliminate workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. 

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be able to provide and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check
  • Valid class 5F driver's license with satisfactory driver's abstract
  • Able to work on-call and outside regular working hours, Able to operate a Government-owned/leased vehicle
  • Eligible to write the American Board of Industrial Hygiene Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) exam or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) exam.  Note: Candidates who do not meet this condition at the time of hire may be considered on an underfill basis
  • Able to travel throughout the Province to carry-out responsibilities of the position, Able to work outside, in various environmental conditions, Able to work during periods of physical activity such as walking, climbing, crawling, bending, kneeling with potential exposure to different environmental conditions
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • 4-year undergraduate degree in physical sciences, chemical engineering, chemical or biological sciences, or a related discipline. 
  • Experience working as a professional industrial or occupational hygienist.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, fundamentals, principles, rights, duties and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of occupational hygiene practices (including evaluation, assessments, air sampling and analysis, noise monitoring, and related equipment).
  • Excellent verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and related documents in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to lead and manage difficult situations. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team and interact with potentially difficult individuals in a respectful, objective and professional manner. 
  • Ability to exercise sound reason, judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) or equivalent applications and other database software applications.

Duties:
The Occupational Hygienist conducts inspections and investigations in all sector groups on matters related to occupational health including fatalities, right to refuse situations, serious incidents and other related complaints. The position uses technical equipment and expertise to recognize, evaluate and determine compliance related to the control of occupational health hazards. Assignments are completed in accordance with The Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, The Hazardous Product Act , and the operational procedures set by the Branch. The Hygienist's work involves: conducting inspections and investigations ; assisting workers, employers, safety and health professionals and medical personnel to identify and resolve issues related to chemical, biological or other health hazards; issuing improvement and stop work orders; and providing information to improve awareness of and compliance with safety and health legislation. The position may be called upon to give evidence at an inquest related to an incident or fatality or provide evidence before the Manitoba Labour Board.
