Introduction
Manitoba Environment and Climate Change is looking for three water quality monitoring assistants to join a team in the delivery of programs to protect and manage surface water quality in Manitoba. Water quality is a focus area in the new provincial water management strategy and these positions will play an important role in delivering Manitoba's objectives under this focus area. Two, 18 week positions (running from May to September) will support the Clean Beaches Program with one position located in Winnipeg and the second in Brandon. The third position (40 week position running from April to January) will support the Lake Winnipeg Water Quality Monitoring Program, based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, with fieldwork based out of Gimli, Manitoba. Duties:
The incumbent provides water quality monitoring field work and other related duties in support of protecting and managing surface water quality in Manitoba. Each position is responsible for providing field and office assistance to water quality specialists for water quality data collection, site assessments, analysis and reporting, sampling preparation and data organization. Field support includes conducting water sampling across Manitoba. The 40 week position involves participating in the field cruises of MV Namao including staying on ship for periods of up to three weeks. The incumbents will prepare sampling equipment and maintain adequate sample bottle inventories. The incumbent will analyze and organize sample results and prepare information for technical reviews. The incumbent will provide program assistance to other Water Science and Watershed Management water quality monitoring programs.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- A degree or diploma with an environmental focus or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Experience conducting field work including but not limited to, collection of data, following protocols, collecting environmental samples, and use of water quality monitoring equipment such as multimeter probes and sensors.
- Strong note taking skills.
- Excellent organizational skills to meet time-sensitive deadlines with attention to detail.
- Effective written communication skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and reliably under minimal supervision.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency using Microsoft Office or other comparable software applications.
Desired:
- Ability to collect, analyze and interpret water quality and biological data and recommend appropriate courses of action.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must have a valid full Class 5 Driver's licence and be comfortable with driving long distances.
- Must be able to work long hours with occasional work on weekends or evenings, when required.
- Must be willing and able to travel throughout Manitoba in varying weather conditions with overnight stays.
- Must be physically capable of performing extensive field work (lift and carry 50 lbs) and comfortable working outdoors.
- Must be comfortable working around and in various bodies of water.
