The Health & Safety Branch is mandated to manage risks to the safety, health and well being of employees, visitors and the public arising out of the work activities performed by or on behalf of the Department. The Director is tasked with managing risks related to the Department’s transportation, infrastructure and physical assets.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Must be available to work outside regular working hours and/or travel to remote locations by car, plane and boat with possibility of consecutive overnight stays.
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 48lbs.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, climb, and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must hold Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certificate or willing to obtain the certification within the first 12 months of employment in the position.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Completion of a degree, diploma or a recognized designation in Occupational Health and Safety (i.e. Construction Safety Officer Program - NCSO designation) and experience in safety and health related work. A suitable combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, Job Hazard analysis, inspections, implementing a safety management system and implementing emergency response plans.
  • Experience conducting and documenting thorough incident investigations.  
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience participating in Workplace Health and Safety Committees.
  • Excellent decision making skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to write reports, prepare presentations, training materials etc. 
  • Knowledge of current federal and provincial Occupational Safety and Health legislations, safe work practices, workplace serious accidents/incidents investigations and risk management principles and applicable building and fire codes.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to deal with various stakeholders in a professional, and respectful manner.

Duties:
The Safety Advisor reports to the Manager of Health and Safety & Risk Control, the incumbent is responsible for the sustainable delivery, coordination and evaluation of the Health and Safety Program, providing consultative, technical, advisory support and mitigation on risks and hazards to managers in assigned Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) workplaces for both safety resourced and non-resourced work areas. The Safety Advisor provides managers with technical assistance in the implementation of Health and Safety programming.
The Safety Advisor conducts inspections, investigations, gap analysis and assessments of MTI workplaces, operations and activities, and assists in appropriate action planning to identify and implement control measures to eliminate MTI workplace hazards and to prevent injury and property damage in workplaces.
