Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Must be able to work extended hours, weekends, and be subject to call out.
  • Must be able to work in outdoor rough terrain environments, which may include exposure to road construction equipment, roadway traffic, asphalt plant area, noise, dust, hand/power tools, moving equipment, slip-trip-fall, bending/lifting, carrying/twisting, insects, vegetation & sharp objects etc.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or completion of the Department's Level 3 training program. An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Considerable experience of drafting and design standards, CADD software and construction standards for grading, base and paving projects.
  • Directly related preliminary and roadway construction survey experience.
  • Knowledge Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (i.e. Micro Station, GEOPAK, Auto TURN etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external stakeholders in order to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts. 
  • Excellent written communication skills to maintain accurate records, prepare applicable correspondence, and associated technical reports.
  • Ability to analyze incomplete or conflicting data, and make decisions or recommend alternative solutions by performing complex design and survey calculations.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively to establish effective working relationships with management and support staff in a team environment. 
  • Ability to establish priorities, complete assignments on time and work under general supervision.
  • Ability to provide appropriate technical guidance, coach and train others in best practices, continuous learning, etc.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, good judgement, discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures.

Duties:
The Regional Design Technologist reports to the Regional Design Engineer (RDE)/Senior Regional Design Technologist (SRDT), performs responsible paraprofessional work and has Lead Hand responsibility for department design and drafting staff.

The Regional Design Technologist works in a specialized technical environment and provides engineering support to regional operations staff in developing functional and detailed designs for interchanges, high-volume at-grade intersections, and complex urban and semi-urban projects, rural and multi-lane highways. 

The Regional Design Technologist requires extensive interaction and co-operation with the Regional Technical Services Engineer/Senior Project Engineers/Senior Project Managers/Regional Project Managers to ensure the Division’s overall objectives are met.
