Manitoba Environment, Climate and Parks is looking for a skilled technician to join a team in the delivery of programs to protect and manage groundwater in Manitoba. Protecting the quality and quantity of groundwater is a focus area in the new provincial water management strategy and this position will play an important role in delivering Manitoba's objectives under this focus area.   

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 driver's licence
  • Must be able to work overtime when required
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout Manitoba in varying weather conditions with overnight stays
  • Must be able  to lift and carry 23 kgs (50 lbs)

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post secondary degree in in geology, environmental studies, resource or ecosystem management or a diploma in water resources or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Knowledge of geology, groundwater, wells and hydrogeologic principles.
  • Experience installing or supervising the installation of monitoring wells, logging cuttings, and performing slug or pumping tests. 
  • Proficient data management and analysis skills including the use of MS excel and databases. 
  • Experience using hydrogeologic software to evaluate aquifer properties with GIS and mapping. 
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. 


Desired:
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Knowledge or experience with specialized groundwater monitoring equipment, geophysical tools and geophysical interpretation.  
  • Experience using GPS equipment and gas powered equipment such as generators & air compressors.

Duties:
The incumbent provides skilled technical support contributing to groundwater programming and management for the province. The position is responsible for providing field and office assistance to hydrogeologists for data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting required for specific projects and studies. Field support includes installing or supervising contractors to drill and install wells; collecting and logging samples; sealing wells; groundwater sampling; performing aquifer tests and geophysical logging. The incumbent will prepare stratigraphic cross-sections and aquifer maps, analyse aquifer properties, and prepare information for technical reviews. The incumbent also assist with requirements of The Groundwater and Water Well Act.
