The Roadway Preservation Technician (RPT) performs responsible technical and engineering related work exercising independence of action while adhering to department standards, specifications, policies and procedures and reports to the Preservation Quality Manager. The RPT may make decisions regarding own priorities and work schedules and may have Lead Hand responsibility for department staff on a project site. The RPT will perform one or more of the following individual functions: High Performance Chip Seal Technician, Micro Surfacing Technician, Pavement Marking Technician, Rout & Seal Technician, Asphalt Mixing Technician, or Project Coordinator.

The Roadway Preservation Technician ensures quality in roadway construction by monitoring materials and construction methods and enforcing specifications for the program operations by:
• Acts as primary onsite department representative on construction work and private contracts.
• Inspects materials to be used for roadway construction and accepts/rejects product(s) based on department standards, specifications and guidelines.
• Collaborates with and monitors contractor’s operation on a daily basis to ensure contract specifications (including traffic control, assessment of working days), contract design quantities, and budget parameters are met.
The Roadway Preservation Technician may also take on the role as Project Coordinator by monitoring, coordinating, or supervising emergency response projects (i.e., flood, fire events), and ensuring quality of roadway or off-road construction methods are me.
