Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a full and valid Class 5 driver's licence
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Canadian firearms license (PAL - Possession and Acquisition License) 
  • Be physically capable of performing the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Must meet Department Problem Wildlife Firearm Training and Certification Standard
  • Must be willing to work weekends, overtime, and to be on call all hours of the day

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Experience with problem wildlife control and wild fur trapping
  • Experience and proficiency with the use of firearms
  • Strong  verbal communication skills
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience working with minimal supervision
  • Ability to make safe and effective decisions

Desired:
  • Experience with wildlife or fisheries surveys or sampling
  • Mechanical, carpentry, and building maintenance experience
  • Remote or backcountry patrol experience

Duties:
Reporting to the District Supervisor in Churchill, the incumbent will be responsible for assisting with monitoring and controlling polar bears in and around the town of Churchill with the use of hazing and trapping techniques. The position will assist with caring for polar bears held in the Polar Bear Holding Facility. The position will also assist with the administration of the Polar Bear Alert program, with remote and backcountry patrols, public education and engagement, problem wildlife control for other wildlife species and wildlife and fisheries surveys. The incumbent will assist with the monitoring and tracking of department inventory; assist with construction, maintenance and repair of departmental equipment or infrastructure, and perform other duties as assigned.
