Manitoba Transportation & Infrastructure is seeking highly motivated individuals to work with our Water Operations Branch at our Dauphin and Morris locations. Water Operations ensures safe and effective provincial water related infrastructure through the delivery of inspection, planning, design, maintenance, rehabilitation and construction activities. The Branch is responsible for the overall operation and management of an infrastructure inventory that includes drains, dams, flood protection dikes, diversions, bridges, culverts and pumping stations.  Water Operations has a major role in flood response activities and Water Capital Program delivery.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess a valid Class 5.0 driver's licence
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.
  • Must be able to travel frequently within the province by ground, water and air transportation and be away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures. 
  • Must be able to work for extended hours and periods of time.
  • Must be able to work around hazards such as in, or near water and ice, construction equipment, roadway traffic, fabrication plant area, noise, dust hand/power tools, moving equipment, slip-trip-fall, bending/lifting, carrying/twisting, insects, vegetation and sharp objects.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Completion of a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or completion of the Department’s Level 2 training courses.   
  • Surveying experience.
  • Construction inspection experience related to earthwork projects. 
  • Experience in interpreting engineering drawings and specifications and performing math calculations. 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively in teams. 
  • Effective verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate courteously with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare reports and complete daily diaries, field notes and work sheets.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and judgment.

Desired:
  • Knowledge of bridge construction specifications, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures.

Duties:
The Water Control Inspector performs engineering related functions while adhering to department standards, specifications, policies, procedures and sound survey practices. These functions include Waterway & Embankment Construction Inspector, Concrete Inspector, Senior Density Inspector, Hydraulic Metering, Geotechnical Inspector, Instrument Person and Technical Support.
