Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5 driver's license, have access to vehicle and/or ability to travel within Manitoba.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Agriculture-related degree (Masters level preferred) and extensive experience in the agriculture industry relating to agricultural production, agri-business, agri-ecology, agri-engineering, or agri-innovation; a combination of related education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Management experience with responsibility for human and financial resources.
  • Proven ability as a leader with a commitment to create, support and sustain a diverse environment that enables staff to achieve results and to develop for the future.
  • Experience translating strategic priorities into clear operational and business plans, and experience with strategic performance management and measurement systems (e.g. Key Performance Indicators, Balanced Scorecards).
  • Experience leading the development and implementation of research and innovation programs and policies, initiatives, and legislation that are linked to Department objectives and strategies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong political acumen demonstrated through experience providing strategic advice to senior leaders on complex topics and sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage opportunities for innovation, find creative solutions to issues, and successfully manage change.
  • Knowledge of the issue of climate change and its affect on the agriculture industry
Desired:
  • Experience building relationships with Indigenous people and implementing the principles of reconciliation
  • Meets eligibility requirements for the Professional Agrologist designation with Agrologists Manitoba
  • Experience building relationships with industry is considered an asset.

Duties:
The Director of the Agriculture Branch is responsible and accountable for providing leadership and management to enable sustainable and resilient crop and livestock production of food and agri-products to advance the competitive position of Manitoba's primary agriculture production industry in the domestic and global marketplace in a manner that is sustainable and adaptable to evolving public, climatic, resource and economic conditions.  The position is also responsible for leading the development and implementation of research and innovation programs and policies, strategic initiatives, staffing, budgeting and legislation that are linked to Department objectives and strategies.  The Director may represent Manitoba on provincial and national committees.
