Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must be eligible for membership in the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists with Professional Agrologist designation and the ability to obtain membership once successful for the position.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license with the ability to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba including ability to work alone in rural and semi-remote environments.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with an emphasis in apiculture or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Experience in apiculture agronomy or commercial apiculture. 
  • Knowledge of environmental practices, issues and regulations (The Bee Act) related to apiculture and land resource management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively, collaborate and lead a multidisciplinary team with internal and external stakeholders.   
  • Ability to independently manage projects.
  • Ability to undertake necessary research and information gathering to keep current on issues/trends in the industry. 
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively prepare and deliver training presentations. 
  • Excellent written communication skills.   
  • Strong time managment and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines.

Duties:
The Industry Development Specialist - Apiarist is a provincial specialist position responsible for administering The Bee Act and providing leadership in enhancing the development, productivity and profitability of the honeybee industry and the operation of the Apiary Disease Inspection and Control Program. This position is for leading and supporting strategies and activities that will result in the continued development of a viable and sustainable bee and honey industry.  As a provincial specialist, the incumbent will provide advice to the department, industry, department staff, and primary producers in the areas of expansion opportunities, industry development and sustainable production management.
