Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Manitoba, or eligible for full licensure with the ability to attain prior to hire
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when emergencies dictate
  • Must be able to travel provincially, nationally and internationally
  • A valid class 5 driver's licence and access to a vehicle for travel
  • Physically capable to perform the duties of the position including moving animals and carcasses and carrying out psychologically demanding field work under adverse conditions
  • Must provide satisfactory criminal record check, and be legally entitled to use firearms, as well as handle and administer narcotic drugs

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an educational institute accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, or successful completion of the North American Licensing Exam (NAVLE) and other pre-requisite exams required to obtain a full licence to practice in Manitoba
  • Experience practicing veterinary medicine with livestock (e.g. cattle, pigs) and companion animals (e.g. dogs, cats)
  • Experience in veterinary medicine with animal welfare, animal behaviour/ethology, infectious disease, disease control, epidemiology, regulatory veterinary medicine and/or veterinary public health
  • Experience diagnosing and treating disease conditions of livestock and companion animals
  • Knowledge of companion animal husbandry and animal welfare, including individuals and groups of animals, companion animal breeding practices, animal shelter/rescue practices, pound and boarding kennel practices, and euthanasia of animals
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams including internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative by anticipating potential issues and taking action to resolve them
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), and the ability to use databases such as Access

Duties:
The Companion Animal Welfare Veterinarian is the provincial expert and specialist for companion animal welfare in Manitoba. They are responsible for enforcement of The Animal Care Act and other acts and regulations that relate to animal welfare standards in Manitoba, with an emphasis on companion animals (such as dogs, cats, and non-domestic species). The Companion Animal Welfare Veterinarian is the primary backup to the Large Animal Welfare Veterinarian and will work with livestock as part of their regular duties.
