Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Must qualify for an appointment as a Staff Justice of the Peace pursuant to statutory requirements, including must be 18 years of age or older and you must be a resident of Manitoba 
  • Ability to work overtime when required with little notice
  • Satisfactory Enhanced Security Check

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Significant administrative /clerical experience in a court or related legal environment
  • Experience with court documentation, processes and procedures
  • Experience interpreting Federal/Provincial legislation including the Criminal Code
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including ability to communicate legal principles in plain language
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience working effectively within a team environment
  • Effective analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to make sound independent decisions 
  • Experience dealing effectively with the public, judiciary, legal profession, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders 
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure to meet workload demands and deadlines
  • Proficiency with MS Word and Outlook

Desired:
  • Experience with related court system applications including CCAIN, TLMS and COMS

Duties:
Staff Justices are required to perform administrative judicial functions with limited judicial decision making and discretion.  Judicial appointment comes under the authority of The Provincial Court Act and is made by Order-in-Council on the recommendation of Cabinet.  Upon appointment, all justices must successfully complete judicial training as determined by the Chief Judge.  Powers and duties of a staff justice of the peace are mandated by The Justices of the Peace Regulation under The Provincial Court Act and their designations are authorized by the Director of Justice of the Peace Services.
