A satisfactory security check, Criminal Record Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Child Abuse Registry Check are conditions of employment. Ability to travel within Manitoba (including in small planes) is required. The ability to work extended and flexible hours including short notice call ins is required.
 
As part of the screening/selection process, all candidates must attend a testing session on the date(s) noted below in Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, Dauphin, Thompson, or The Pas to assess suitability, judgement, decision making and problem solving. You are required to attend testing at the location for which you are applyingNote that all testing locations are for employment as a term part-time Sheriff’s Officer position located at either Winnipeg Sheriff Services Office, Portage la Prairie Sheriff Services Office, Dauphin Sheriff Services Office, Thompson Sheriff Services Office or The Pas Sheriff Services Office.  Please ensure you indicate which location(s) you are applying for in the subject line or in the body of your email or covering letter.
 
  • Testing for the Winnipeg Sheriff Services will take place on June 22nd and 23rd, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Woodsworth Building located at 405 Broadway in the cafeteria located on the main floor.
  • Testing for Portage la Prairie Sheriff Services will take place on June 22nd at 6:00 pm at the Portage la Prairie Court Office located at Provincial Building, 25 Tupper Street North, in the basement cafeteria.  
  • Testing for the Dauphin Sheriff Services will take place on June 22nd at 5:30 pm at the Assiniboine Community College located at 520 Whitmore Avenue East.
  • Testing for the Thompson Sheriff Services will take place on June 22nd at 7:00 pm at the Thompson Court Office located at 59 Elizabeth Drive
  • Testing for The Pas Sheriff Services will take place on June 23rd at 7:00 pm at The Pas Court House located at 300 3rd Street East

Based on satisfactory test results, candidates applying to the competition will be invited for an interview at their choice of employment location:
 
  • Winnipeg – from July 5 to July 18, 2016
  • Portage la Prairie – July 11 and July 12, 2016 
  • Dauphin – July 14, 2016
  • Thompson – July 18 and July 19, 2016
  • The Pas – July 21, 2016
 
For selected candidates, a mandatory unpaid training program of approximately 3-4 weeks (full days Monday to Friday) is required.  Training will take place starting approximately the week of August 29, 2016 for the Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie employment locations. Note that those who are hired for the Portage la Prairie Sheriff Services Office will complete their training in Winnipeg starting the week of August 29, 2016.  Those who are hired for the Dauphin Sheriff Services will complete their training in Dauphin starting the week of August 22, 2016. Those who are hired for The Pas Sheriff Services and Thompson Sheriff Services will complete their training in Thompson starting the week of August 29, 2016.
 
Following successful completion of the training program, candidates will be hired as part-time term Sheriff’s Officers.  Regular full-time positions are then subsequently filled with part-time term employees.
 
Conditions of employment: 

A Criminal Record Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and a Child Abuse Registry Check are mandatory and must be obtained prior to the commencement of Sheriff’s Officer Training for all locations.   Applicants who have a criminal record will not be precluded from the remainder of the competition process, however, may be required to provide a hard copy (Transcript of Convictions) of their criminal record to Human Resource Services. All successful applicants will be subject to a background security clearance check prior to employment.  A satisfactory medical fitness report must also be completed prior to the commencement of training. Also, a Full Class 4 Driver’s License (4F), satisfactory Driver’s Abstract, First Aid and CPR (level C) certificates will be required prior to being offered employment.

Desired:
  • Related education, training or experience in law enforcement or a similar field.
  • General knowledge of the Court system, related processes and procedures.
 
Testing:
 
Please be present at least 10 minutes prior to the start time for registration.  You will be required to provide a photocopy of both parts or both sides (if you have a 1 piece licence) of a Full Class 5 driver’s licence (5F).  Applicants who do not have a Full Class 5 driver’s license (5F) or fail to provide a photocopy of their driver's license will not be eligible to participate in the testing process.  Class 5 Intermediate (5I) or Learner’s licences (5L) will not be acceptedIt is preferable if you can provide a photocopy of a valid Class 4 driver’s licence.
 
Interview:
 
A satisfactory Driver’s Abstract, a photocopy of a Criminal Record Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check are mandatory and must be provided (or proof of request provided i.e. receipt) at the time of your interview.  Applicants who have a criminal record will not be precluded from the remainder of the competition process, however, may be required to provide a hard copy (Transcript of Convictions) of their criminal record to Human Resource Services should the results indicate that there may or may not be a criminal record. All successful applicants will be subject to a background security clearance check prior to employment.
 
Sheriff’s Officer Training:
 
A medical fitness report will be required prior to the commencement of Sheriff’s Officer Training in all locations.   A Full Class 4 Driver’s License (4F), First Aid and CPR (level C) certificates are to be provided prior to the completion of training and before an offer of employment can be made.  

Duties:

Responsible for escorting, guarding, transporting and maintaining control of persons in custody.  Maintains order, security and decorum in all courts as required.  Assists in the enforcement of Writs and court orders, including seizures and evictions, delivers various court documents and apprehends persons under bench warrants. More details of the duties for the Sheriff’s Officer position will be provided during the testing session.
