Introduction
As a branch of Manitoba Mineral Resources, the Manitoba Geological Survey supports the exploration and mining industry in Manitoba through the generation and distribution of state-of-the-art geoscientific information. The Geological Survey is responsible for documenting, assessing and reporting on the geology and mineral resources of the Province, and providing scientific expertise to a diverse group of clients to the benefit of all Manitobans.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be eligible to be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) as a Professional Geoscientist or Geoscientist-in-Training.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license, or equivalent from another jurisdiction.
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork (including in remote areas) for up to several weeks each year.
  • The successful applicant must have current certifications in first aid, boating and firearms possession OR agree to obtain the credentials within one year of hiring.
     
Essential:
 
  • B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in geology, or B.Sc. Honours in geology with at least two years relevant experience in Precambrian or mineral deposits geology. 
  • Experience in field-based geological mapping and/or detailed mineral deposit research.
  • Experience in preparing  technical reports and maps.
  • An excellent level of written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Experience in mineral deposits geology relevant to Manitoba’s Precambrian Shield (i.e., VMS, magmatic nickel, orogenic gold or intrusion-related metallic deposits).
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision (i.e., organized; self motivated; good time management skills).
  • Knowledge of orienteering, navigation and camping, to ensure accurate location of field observations and safe travel in remote wilderness areas.
 
Desired:
 
  • Experience in geological mapping or mineral deposits studies in Manitoba’s Precambrian Shield.
  • Experience in areas such as exploration geology, geophysics, geologic modelling, and GIS.
 
Duties:
A Precambrian Geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey (MGS) is responsible for developing, conducting and reporting on multi-year geological mapping and research projects to document the Precambrian geology and mineral potential in Manitoba. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing field and laboratory-based studies of Precambrian rocks and mineral deposits by identifying project areas; collecting, evaluating and interpreting diverse sets of geoscientific data; preparing geological maps, reports and presentations; and assessing the mineral potential of study areas. Precambrian Geologists with MGS are expected to collaborate with industry, university and other government agencies to achieve maximum scientific and societal value from scientific programs, and to liaise with clients, communities and First Nations on issues related to land use, in accordance with Sustainable Development and Protected Areas initiatives.
