Introduction
The Manitoba Geological Survey Branch of the Department of Mineral Resources is seeking a versatile and highly self-motivated geoscientist to join the Sedimentary Geoscience Section.
 
The incumbent will be responsible for the formation and implementation of geological investigations of multi-year programming to document the Phanerozoic industrial and specialty mineral and crushed stone aggregate potential in Manitoba; will interface and liaise with senior technical personnel in all levels of government and university departments on matters relating to Phanerozoic industrial/specialty minerals, crushed stone aggregate, land use issues, protected areas, water resources, and environmental concerns; and must be able to provide sound technical advice on Phanerozoic industrial mineral and specialty minerals and crushed stone aggregate potential and development to private sector and government agencies. An important function is to recognize and promote new opportunities for Phanerozoic industrial mineral and specialty and crushed stone aggregate.
 
The successful candidate has excellent communication skills, is forward-thinking, can effectively manage and organize available resources, deal with changing priorities and tight deadlines, and works well independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications:
Essential:
 
  • M.Sc. in geology with relevant experience preferred, although a B.Sc. in geology with relevant experience would be considered.
  • Experience in stratigraphic principles, geological mapping, bedrock geology, glacial geology and economic geology.
  • Experienced in preparing scientific and technical reports/papers.
  • An excellent level of English written and oral communication skills to effectively work with stakeholders and clients.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision (i.e. organized; self motivated; time management skills).
  
Desired:
 
  • Experience working in the area of Manitoba’s Phanerozoic geology and stratigraphy.
  • Experience in industrial minerals geology as it relates to Manitoba’s Phanerozoic sedimentary basins would be an asset.
  • Experience in areas such as geophysical exploration, interpretation of logs, familiarity with coring, sampling, and drilling, geologic modelling, and GIS an asset.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be eligible to be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) as a Professional Geoscientist or Geoscientist-in-Training.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Certifications of first aid, boating, and firearms are an asset, but will be provided if the candidate otherwise meets the qualifications.
  • Ability to work in field (including remote areas) for few days and/or up to several weeks each year, with occasional travel to attend meetings and conferences.
 
Duties:
 
The incumbent will conduct and budget geological investigations in Phanerozoic and surficial terrains utilizing tools such as geochemistry and geophysics, in stand-alone projects or in support of other Manitoba Geological Survey projects; conduct subsurface mapping and correlation of Phanerozoic strata using well logs, outcrop samples and drillcore; plan and implement detailed and specialized studies of Manitoba’s industrial/specialty mineral and crushed stone aggregate resources for the purpose of stimulating exploration and development; maintain and supplement crushed stone aggregate inventory by field mapping and site specific investigations; maintain liaisons, work collaboratively and provide expert advice to all levels of government, clients and stakeholders; prepare comprehensive maps and reports; present posters and deliver presentations at conferences; continually strive to upgrade technical abilities and keep abreast of industrial/specialty mineral and crushed stone aggregate issues.
