Introduction
The Manitoba Geological Survey Branch of the Department of Mineral Resources is seeking a versatile and highly self-motivated geoscientist to join the Sedimentary Geoscience Section.
 
The incumbent will participate in the formation and implementation of geological investigations of multi-year programming to document the Quaternary geology of the province; is responsible for investigating and mapping the sand and gravel aggregate potential in Manitoba; is expected to compile, evaluate and synthesize Quaternary geological data, and to develop new concepts and isolate gaps in the existing Quaternary knowledge base that warrant further investigation; will interface and liaise with senior technical personnel in all levels of government and university departments on matters relating to Quaternary mapping and geology, sand and gravel aggregate, land use issues, protected areas, water resources, and environmental concerns; and must be able to provide sound technical advice on sand and gravel aggregate potential and development to private sector and government agencies.
 
The successful candidate has excellent communication skills, is forward-thinking, can effectively manage and organize available resources, deal with changing priorities and tight deadlines, work well independently and as part of a team, and must be willing and able to conduct field work, including in remote areas, for 3 – 9 weeks each year. 
This is a professional geoscientist position where the incumbent will be mentored by senior staff, and encouraged to continue their professional growth throughout their career by creating a personalized learning plan.

Qualifications:
Essential:
  • B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geology with relevant experience preferred, although an Honours B.Sc. in geology with at least two years relevant experience, may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience in field and office geological mapping of surficial materials.
  • Experience in interpreting a wide variety of surficial, sedimentological, palynological and geochemical data to develop local, regional and/or provincial-scale interpretations and models regarding Quaternary characteristics, resource potential and depositional and stratigraphic history.
  • Experienced in preparing scientific and technical reports/papers.
  • An excellent level of English written and oral communication skills to effectively work with stakeholders and clients. 
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision (I.E. organized; self motivated; time management skills)
  • Knowledge of orienteering, navigation (GIS) and camping, to ensure accurate location of field observations and safe travel in remote wilderness areas.
 
Desired:
  • Experience working in Manitoba’s Quaternary geology preferred.
  • Knowledge of subsurface mapping techniques and tools (e.g., drilling methods, downhole geophysical tools) in order to develop stratigraphic models would be an advantage.

  • Must be eligible to be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM) as a Professional Geoscientist or Geoscientist-in-Training.
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Certifications of first aid, boating, and firearms are an asset, but will be provided if the candidate otherwise meets the qualifications.
  • Ability to complete field projects in remote areas for 3–9 weeks each year.
     
 
Duties:
The duties of this position include developing, conducting and budgeting projects for acquisition of new geological data on Manitoba’s surficial deposits, including sand and gravel aggregate, in collaboration with senior staff; conducts geoscience studies through field work and office-based data analysis; plans all logistics and supervision of seasonal assistants for field season; maintains and supports sand and gravel aggregate inventory by field mapping and site specific investigations; updates and produces sand and gravel aggregate series maps; develops long term goals and projects to fill Quaternary geology information gaps; maintains geological liaison with government agencies and other provincial departments in matters relating to Quaternary geology; establishes and maintains liaison with mining and First Nation communities on matters related to mineral resource potential; prepares comprehensive maps and reports for publication; presents posters and delivers presentations at conferences; and continually strives to upgrade technical abilities.
