Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship is seeking qualified individuals to fill various Forestry Technical Assistant positions located in Winnipeg.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence, or an acceptable equivalent
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, all-terrain vehicles, boats or rotary or fixed wing aircraft
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime when required and, and work out-of-town for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties of the position which require moderate physical effort (e.g. Carrying equipment such as chainsaws and forestry samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions)
 
Essential:
 
  • Enrolled in or a graduate of a Forestry/Biological/Environmental Science Degree or a Diploma from a recognized Resource Technology Program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience conducting forest surveys
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Effective verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with the public and in difficult situations
  • Experience driving a variety of vehicles such as trucks or vans and towing trailers over a variety of road types (e.g. Paved highways, gravel roads, forestry roads/trails etc.)
  • Knowledge and/or experience interpreting maps and aerial photographs, as well as the ability to navigate and use a compass, use a GPS unit and GIS technology
  • Ability to accurately collect and record data
 
Desired:
 
  • Experience in the operation of mechanical/motorized equipment such as chainsaws and ATV's
  • Experience identifying native Manitoba forest tree and shrub species

Duties:

This is a technical field position that assists in the delivery of urban and woodland forestry field surveys.  The successful candidates will be responsible for working in insect and disease surveys, growth and yield surveys, forest renewal and Dutch elm disease surveys.
