Water Management and Structures Division ensures safe and effective provincial water control infrastructure and structures, through the delivery of inspection, planning, design, maintenance, rehabilitation and construction activities.  Responsible for the overall management of infrastructure inventory that includes: bridges, large culverts, thru-dike culverts, drains, dams, reservoirs, water control structures, diversions and pumping stations. Provides water management through operation of the provincial water control system, flood forecasting, and development and implementation of emergency response plans.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be a registered member (or eligible for registration) with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
  • Bachelor level degree in Engineering (civil preferred) or equivalent Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba qualifications.
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Requires working for extended hours and shift work when required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within Manitoba.
     
Essential:
 
  • Experience working with hydraulic theory including flood routing and open channel hydraulics.
  • Experience working in prairie hydrology.
  • Experience in operation or design of water resource infrastructure.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts.
  • Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing high level complex technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Effective organizational, project and time management skills to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong problem solving skills with ability to solve administrative and technical problems and strive to find better solutions.
     
Desired:
 
  • Experience using GIS in solving complex water resource problems.
  • Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures. 
     

Duties:

Reporting to the Manager of Hydrologic Operations within the Hydrologic Forecasting and Water Management branch, the Senior Hydrologic Operations Engineer is responsible for the operation of the three components of Manitoba’s flood control infrastructure: the Fairford River Water Control Structure, the Portage Diversion, and the Red River Floodway. The Senior Hydrologic Operations Engineer is also responsible for managing the Province of Manitoba’s surface water monitoring program and coordinating Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation’s contributions to meteorological network partnerships. This includes managing the branch’s real-time hydrometric data acquisition and dissemination systems.
