This is a Manitoba Diversity Internship Program development opportunity for two Assessment Officers. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who declare themselves as an Aboriginal person. The successful candidates may be eligible for a regular appointment after completion of the Internship Program.   • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be willing and able to travel periodically throughout the province of Manitoba with overnight stays.
  • Must be willing and able to work extended hours periodically as required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence.
  • A satisfactory criminal records check is a condition of employment.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
 
Essential
  • Certificate in Real Property Assessment from the University of British Columbia. A combination of relevant experience in real estate, the construction field or a similar sector and relevant post secondary education may be considered.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Customer service experience including the ability to handle public enquiries and complaints.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) or equivalent software applications.
 
Desired
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Experience inspecting and/or assessing various types of properties.
  • Experience in building construction, land surveying, GIS, agriculture, real estate and/or appraisals.

Duties:

The incumbent inspects residential, farm and commercial property and records characteristics for valuation, classification, and assignment of liability to taxation. The incumbent will update property and ownership characteristics in the database, and determine value, class, and liability, as well as communicate assessment information to the public, municipal councils and staff. Under supervision, the incumbent will present evidence at the Board of Revision hearings.
