Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship is currently recruiting for two Regional Wildlife Manager positions one in Central Region located in Gimli and one in Western Region located in either Brandon, Dauphin or Swan River. The department will also be recruiting for another position in the new year for the Northwest Region located in The Pas.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Full Stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to travel, with occasional overnight accommodations.
  • Must be physically capable of undertaking the duties of this position which include working outdoors in all weather conditions and walking long distances over potentially rough terrain.
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime when required.
  • Must be able to operate off road vehicles and snowmobiles.
     
Essential Criteria:
  • Degree in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management or a related discipline.  An equivalent combination of education and pertinent experience may also be considered.
  • Extensive experience in the planning, delivery and evaluation of resource management programs, preferably in Wildlife.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people. 
  • Experience working with First Nation and Aboriginal communities.
  • Superior verbal communication skills including the ability to make formal and informal presentations.
  • Excellent leadership skills for the purpose of building high functioning and cohesive teams and building consensus on complex matters.
  • Supervisory experience including the ability to manage, influence, motivate and evaluate the performance of others.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent computer software programs.
  • Strong written communication skills including experience preparing executive level correspondence and reports, including technical reports.
  • Demonstrated applied biological knowledge including scientific methodology, literature and work experience related to population monitoring.
     
Desired Criteria:
  • A good knowledge of wildlife related legislation, agricultural practices and resource use in Manitoba.
  • Experience with financial management including budget development and administration. 
  • Proficient in the use of GPS, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or Google Earth, interpretation of topographic maps and aerial photography. 
  • Knowledge of the legal framework related to Crown Aboriginal Consultation including a strong understanding of Treaties and Aboriginal Rights in Manitoba.

Duties:

Reporting to Regional Director, the Regional Wildlife Manager is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and overall administration of all regional wildlife management programs for the Region.  Responsibilities include budget planning and administration, program and policy development at the provincial and regional level, program implementation and evaluation, staff supervision, client service, resource inventory, planning and allocation as well as representing departmental wildlife interests as a member of the Region’s Integrated Regional Management Team and the Interdepartmental Bloc Planning Committee. The Regional Wildlife Manager, depending on location, is responsible for working with and maintaining relationships with elected officials from cities, towns, LGD’s, Rural Municipalities, Aboriginal and Northern Communities within the region. In addition, the Wildlife Manager will work with local wildlife associations including licensed and rights-based users, and various other stakeholder groups, as well as ensuring wildlife activities will be conducted with the appropriate level of scientific rigor.
