Introduction
Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship is seeking a highly motivated, qualified individual to fill the position of Regional Fire Technician in our Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba location.  The Manitoba government has a comprehensive benefits package which includes extended health care, health spending account, dental care, vision care, long term disability insurance, group life insurance, maternity/paternity leave, family related leave, and a defined pension plan (some pension plans allow for portability between the Civil Service Superannuation Board and employers).

  • Must possess and maintain a full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's license
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position
  • Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba as required, and capable of flying frequently in a wide variety of small aircrafts in adverse weather conditions
 
Essential:
 
  • Graduation from a Resource Management program, with significant experience in wildfire suppression.  An equivalent combination of related education, training and extensive experience may be considered 
  • Supervisory experience, with the ability to plan/organize workloads under tight timelines
  • Demonstrated experience in utilizing fire suppression equipment, including specialized equipment, and complex equipment set-ups and configurations
  • Working knowledge of fire fighting aircraft types and their uses
  • Thorough knowledge of wildfire behaviour and suppression techniques
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs and materials
  • Strong leadership skills including the ability to mentor, coach and motivate others in a team environment, as well as resolve conflict
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including the ability to multitask while making safe and effective decisions under stressful conditions
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge in the interpretation and application of legislation, policy, and procedures as it relates to wildfire management
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook) or similar software applications

  • Experience related to procurement of services and supplies, including inventory control, recording, tracking and reconciling
Duties:
The Regional Fire Technician provides technical expertise and assistance to regional and district field service staff in the planning and delivery of the Eastern and Central Region's forest fire management programs. Reporting to the Fire Control Officer, the Regional Fire Technician is a supervisory position responsible for the daily supervision of the Regional Fire Cache and Regional Fire Ranger staff. Additional responsibilities are: monitoring staff training certification levels and certification currency and co-ordinating re-certification courses and training courses as required; ensuring the quality of the regional Initial Attack Crew, Fire Ranger, and Emergency Fire Fighter (EFF) programs; assisting in the development and instruction of regional and provincial fire training programs; responsibility for the regional fire management inventory system; researching and developing new fire equipment and suppression techniques providing full reports and demonstrations; assisting with selection and recruitment of staff; and representing the region on Provincial Working Groups and Task Teams as assigned.  The Regional Fire Technician will assume the role of Regional Duty Officer on a rotational and “as needed” basis and may be required to participate in a variety of fire suppression activities throughout the regions or province as required.
