The Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent of government. The Manitoba Advocate’s statutory mandate includes representing the rights, interests, and viewpoints of children, youth, and young adults receiving any designated or reviewable services as described under The Advocate for Children and Youth Act. The Manitoba Advocate also reviews and reports upon the standards and quality of those reviewable and designated services provided to children, youth, and young adults who have died, to educate the public and to enhance the safety and well-being of Manitoba children, youth, and young adults.

  • The Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth is looking for candidates who are willing to work on a flexible schedule to cover office demands and when travelling for work related purposes.  

 

Qualifications:
Essential Criteria:

  • High-level experience providing executive administrative support such as the preparation of correspondence, making travel arrangements, coordinating meetings, meeting minute taking, anticipating needs, and following up on actions arising.
  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to manage high volume work load with conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed, and action to be taken.
  • Demonstrated political acumen and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate with senior government officials, media, authorities, agencies, and community collaterals.
  • Experience dealing with highly sensitive matters where information accuracy and attention to detail is critical.
  • Knowledge of legislative and policy requirements with respect to confidentiality, and the ability to maintain the same.
  • Ability to use and knowledge of automated management information systems and MS Office suite.
  • Excellent working knowledge of provincial/First Nations/Metis government structures, protocols and community services provided to children and youth.
  • Understanding of provincial child- and youth-serving programs and public systems, including services/systems such as child and family, youth justice, addictions, disabilities, mental health, education, and victim support, including associated regulations and standards.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the lives of Indigenous peoples and the aims and objectives of Indigenous communities, as well as other diverse cultures with respect to the provision of culturally appropriate services.  

Desired Criteria:
  • Familiarity with The Advocate for Children and Youth Act.
  • Bilingual(French).
  • Ability to communicate in one of Manitoba’s Indigenous languages.

Duties:
Reporting to the Manitoba Advocate, the Executive Coordinator provides highly specialized administration and professional support to the Manitoba Advocate and both Deputy Advocates in a fast-paced environment with significantly complex requirements. 

The incumbent will prepare executive level information on sensitive issues on behalf of the Advocate; manage the calendars and all intakes received by the Advocate or Deputy Advocates in their absence, ensuring that the intake is referred to the appropriate contact.  The incumbent will coordinate and arrange meetings for the Advocate and/or Deputy Advocates with Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chiefs, council members, standing committees, and other executive collaterals, including securing venues if needed, preparing agendas, ensuring the Advocate and Deputies are prepared with necessary information and materials, and the supporting meetings by taking minutes, and following up on action items.

The incumbent will schedule and book travel arrangements for the Manitoba Advocate and Deputy Advocates.  The Executive Coordinator will provide back up to the administrative team as required or as directed.
