Reporting to the Director of Legislation, Policy and Coordination, the Senior Policy Advisor is responsible for providing senior level analysis, advice and recommendations addressing the strategic priorities and mandate of the department. The incumbent plays a leadership role in collaboration within the department and across government, and will use a department-wide lens to promote alignment between policy and programs. The incumbent will also provide leadership in evaluating or developing policies and programs to support strategic objectives.

Qualifications:

Essential:
 

  • Post-secondary degree in Public Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies/Science, or a related field. 
  • Experience working in a government setting, with strong knowledge of government administration, policies, procedures and processes.
  • Experience in strategic planning and complex policy development, including experience researching, evaluating, analyzing and making recommendations on policy options to achieve organizational objectives. 
  • Strong political acumen with the ability to exercise good judgment and discretion and deal with publicly sensitive issues.
  • Strong problem-solving, analysis and decision-making skills with the ability to collaborate on contentious issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to proactively develop and maintain working relationships and interact effectively with government officials, colleagues, various stakeholder groups, and the public using tact and diplomacy.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams with a demonstrated ability to build, motivate and accomplish goals using a team approach.
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to present complex material in an easy-to-understand format for senior level leadership.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with the public and government officials at all levels maintaining professionalism.
  • Strong facilitation skills, including the ability to plan and deliver public engagement and consultation processes.

Duties:

• Works directly on tasks assigned to the Branch including the mandate and high-level strategic priorities of the Department. The incumbent will be assigned by the Director to participate and provide policy expertise and knowledge on selected mandate items and priorities where Branches and Divisions require high-level support. The incumbent will work with subject-matter experts in other Branches/Divisions and with Directors and ADMs, to provide this policy, writing, and other expertise as required.
• Provides leadership in managing comprehensive, complex policy development and analysis.
• Responsible for coordinating a strategic approach to cross-departmental issues. This involves working across departmental divisions and branches, and across departments, to gather and synthesize information required by the Deputy Minister, Minister, or Premier, to relay a provincial perspective on, or make decisions about, sustainable development and environmental issues.
• The incumbent assists the Director in planning, co-ordinating and evaluating the activities of Branch staff to address strategic priorities.
