We are currently seeking two experienced, highly skilled lawyers to join our team in two distinct areas of the branch – Constitutional Law and, Corporate, Commercial and I.T. Candidates must provide a sample of their writing with their application and may be asked to complete a written exercise as well.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree with demonstrated experience and proficiency practising law (criminal or non-criminal) in a common law jurisdiction
    • For the Corporate, Commercial, I.T. Law position: Experience in information technology law, including software licences, hardware acquisition and related service arrangements
    • For the Constitutional Law position: Experience practicing constitutional law, including the ability to present cases in both trial and appellate courts
  • Ability to research and analyze complex issues of law and public policy
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to recognize and assess legal implications in proposed and existing programs and initiatives, and to identify related business and policy ramifications
  • Ability to provide legal advice on complex, time-sensitive and high-profile issues
  • Experience interpreting, explaining and providing legal advice regarding legislation, regulations and policies
  • Experience in developing strategy and leading / participating in negotiations
  • Superior independent written communication skills, including reviewing and drafting legal opinions and agreements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain strong positive working relationships, including with clients and co-workers
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work in a high pressure and time sensitive environment to meet conflicting deadlines
  • Superior verbal communication skills with the ability to speak in a clear and concise manner, as well as deliver presentations 
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and constructively in a team environment
  • Ability to work under pressure and to manage stress effectively while working in a high volume legal practice 
  • Experience and proficiency with legal research software, such as Canlii and Quicklaw
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and Outlook) or equivalent applications

Desired:
  • Prosecutions or Criminal Law experience (only for the Constitutional Law position)

Duties:
Corporate, Commercial and I.T. Position:

Corporate, Commercial and I.T. counsel participate in strategic discussions with clients, develop documents for procurement of hardware, software and services, actively negotiate with vendors, draft agreements and related documents, and provide support in contract interpretation and administration. Counsel may be called upon to apply knowledge of procurement principles (including trade agreement compliance) in other procurement contexts. From time to time, counsel may also do research, prepare legal opinions and provide legal advice on general corporate commercial matters. Counsel may also be involved in the development and review of legislation as well as conducting or participating in education and training services for clients.
Because of the often government wide implications of the advice provided, counsel must be able to work effectively in collaboration with others to ensure that consistent, comprehensive and timely advice is provided.  

Constitutional Law Position

The Constitutional Law incumbent is part of a team of specialized counsel providing litigation and legal advisory services to the Government of Manitoba on behalf of the Attorney General in respect of constitutional issues. This includes matters arising under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Aboriginal and Treaty rights, division of powers under the Constitution Act, 1867, and other constitutional questions.  Responsibilities will include providing expert advice on constitutional issues and conducting complex constitutional litigation in both civil and criminal cases before all levels of court and tribunals.
