This competition will be used to fill one non-seasonal (52 week) departmental Fisheries Technician in Gimli, MB, as well as two seasonal departmental Fisheries Technicians: one in Gimli (22 weeks) and one in Thompson  (18 weeks). 

Conditions of Employment:

• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

• Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba class 5 driver's licence 
• Must be willing and able to travel and work in the field for extended periods, including remote locations
• Must be physically capable to perform the duties of the position including conducting field work in rough terrain potentially in adverse weather conditions
• Must be willing and able to work overtime, including weekends, when required and work out-of-town for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents

Qualifications:
Essential

• Completion of post-secondary studies in resource management or biological sciences with emphasis in fisheries or wildlife management preferred;  an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
• Experience using Microsoft Excel including entering and manipulating biological data.
• Ability to identify fish species found with a working knowledge of fish community and fish habitat assessment methodologies
• Strong  organizational and time management skills including ability to record, compile, and manage large data sets
• Ability to work effectively in a team
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Experience in the safe operation of 4x4 trucks while towing trailers
• Experience operating boats including knowledge of safe boating practices

Duties:
The Assistant Fisheries Technician's primary role is to assist regional staff throughout the province in conducting annual index gillnetting programs in the Central and North East regions of the province. The Assistant Fisheries Technician will sample the catch for length, weight, age, sex and maturity as well as record and enter applicable data.
