Workplace Safety and Health enforces The Workplace Safety and Health Act and its associated regulations in order to protect the safety and health of workers in Manitoba.  Workplace Safety and Health’s inspection and investigation activity focuses on improving legislative compliance in order to eliminate workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses.

Conditions of Employment:

• A satisfactory Criminal Record Check

• Valid class 5 driver's license (or equivalent from another jurisdiction) and ability to operate a Government-owned/leased vehicle.
• Ability to travel throughout the Province to carry out responsibilities of the position.
• Ability to carry out strenuous physical activity such as prolonged walking, climbing ladders, crawling, bending, and kneeling.
• Ability to work underground, in various environmental conditions.
• Ability to work on-call and outside regular working hours.

Qualifications:
Essential:

• Extensive underground mining experience.
• Knowledge of specialized terminology, processes, equipment and procedures related to the mining industry.
• Sound analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to identify and record relevant information/evidence, analyze facts and determine options to resolve situations.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with potentially difficult individuals and manage challenging situations in a respectful and objective manner.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
• Strong written communication skills with the ability to write reports and related documents in a clear and concise manner.
• Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize work and work under pressure to meet time sensitive deadlines.
• Ability to work independently.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook or equivalent software applications. 

Duties:
The Mines Inspector conducts inspections and investigations in mines within an assigned area, and other sectors of responsibility involving fatalities, right to refuse situations, discriminatory actions, serious incidents and other related complaints.  The position completes assignments in accordance with The Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, the Operation of Mines Regulation and the operational procedures set by the Branch. The Inspector's work involves conducting inspections and interviews; preparing written reports on enforcement activities; issuing and determining compliance with improvement orders and stop work orders; and providing information to improve awareness of, and compliance with, safety and health legislation.  The position reviews the use of diesel equipment underground, air quality and ventilation requirements, installation and maintenance of equipment;  inspects shafts, escape ways, mine rescue, fire protection systems and tailings management areas; and tests mine hoist operators.  The position may be called upon to give evidence at an inquest related to an incident or fatality or provide evidence before the Manitoba Labour Board.
