Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Willing and able to fly in both small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft for approximately 6 hours per day
  • Possess and maintain a valid Full Stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Graduate of Manitoba Hunter's Safety Program or equivalent     
  • Certified to purchase and posses firearms license
  • Possess and maintain a valid Possession and Acquisition License - Non-restricted minimum
  • Physically able and willing to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position, including working in remote locations with difficult terrain, removing big game heads with hand meat saws or electric reciprocating saws, gross dissection, bagging and loading of these heads into fridges, freezers and truck beds, driving all-terrain vehicles, etc.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Post secondary education in Natural Resources, Wildlife, biology, zoology, ecology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered 
  • Experience in wildlife identification and carcass handling
  • Experience in hunting and field dressing wildlife including big game
  • Experience in reseach and analysis including data collection and recording. 
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and training staff 
  • Strong written communication skills including report preparation
  • Strong verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills 

Desired:
  • Knowledge in sample collection, preparation, and biological laboratory techniques and methods

Duties:
Under the supervision of the Wildlife Health Program Manager, the employee will assist Wildlife Health Program staff in the development and delivery of the Bovine TB, Chronic Wasting Disease programs, and other wildlife and wildlife health projects. Key duties include operation, maintenance and support of designated Drop-Off Depots where the incumbent will collect, deliver, and analyse hunter submitted biological samples to ensure timely reporting of results.

The incumbent will be required to compile and analyze data, prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations, and attend meetings of various governmental and non-governmental groups including hunters and the general public. The incumbent will be responsible for general laboratory operations and maintenance, wildlife sample collection both in the lab and in the field, will use sharp saws, knives, other related biological lab equipment, and be required to lift heavy equipment and/or wildlife parts. The incumbent also provides support to other regional wildlife managers and programs. The incumbent will provide support and assist in flying aerial and ground wildlife surveys and be required to perform light maintenance on equipment and facilities.
