In order to obtain the Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 2 (VH2) classification, applicants must have at least a Bachelor of Education and formal Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education training. In order to obtain the Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing 3 (VH3) classification applicants must have at least a Masters of Education and formal Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education training.

The Inclusion Support Branch of the Department of Education is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Consultant for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing located in Brandon, MB. The Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing supports school teams with programming suggestions, educational/curricular resources, strategies and information to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Manitoba Teacher's Certificate.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
  • Must be able to provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Must have the ability to travel extensively throughout the Province of Manitoba with occasional overnight stays.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Bachelor of Education and formal training in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education; suitable combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
  • Experience teaching and working with students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
  • Experience providing support for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing using; American Sign Language (ASL), and/or an oral approach, and/or auditory verbal therapy.
  • Experience adapting curriculum to achieve curriculum outcomes.
  • Effective leadership skills that demonstrate and inspire collaboration.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work with all educational partners and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong English communication skills.
  • Experience delivering professional learning for peers.
Desired:
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Special Education Certificate.

Duties:
The Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides ongoing formal and informal curriculum consultation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing school age children.  Specific responsibilities include: providing case specific consultation, pre-service training and professional development for classroom teachers/school teams on appropriate methods of teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. The Consultant for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing also instructs, recommends and assists school personnel in the preparation and application of learning resources, curriculum modifications and curriculum adaptations, assists in planning and monitoring individual special education plans, as well as provides workshops, liaises with various agencies and coordinates student interaction opportunities.
