This position is responsible for assisting, supporting, and representing claimants who wish to appeal a Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPIC) Internal Review decision of their bodily injury claims. The Claimant Adviser assists the claimant with their understanding of the insurance regime under the MPIC Ac. The Claimant Adviser conducts investigations and represents claimants at mediation at the Automobile Injury Mediation office and at appeal hearings before the Automobile Injury Compensation Appeal Commission (AICAC). 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence without restrictions.
  • Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba as required including overnight stays as required.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Experience in interpretation of legislation and researching case precedents and jurisprudence and knowledge of principles of administrative law.
  • Experience investigating and analysing evidence, developing an appeal plan, obtaining supportive evidence and preparing cases for presentation at an adversarial appeal hearing, including conducting cross examination of witnesses.
  • Experience working in an advocating capacity (e.g., providing advice, information and representing the client's rights/interests before an adjudicative body, tribunal, or decision maker).
  • Experience in mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Case management experience, including dealing with multiple case files at the same time.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise political acumen and establish positive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public, co-workers and various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of independence under minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of medical and legal terminology.

Duties:
The Claimant Adviser provides advocacy services to claimants with respect to appeals of Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation (MPIC) decisions relating to bodily injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident. The Claimant Adviser assists the claimant with their understanding of the insurance regime under the MPIC Act, the nature and details of their claim, and, their options in the conduct of their appeals. The Claimant Adviser assesses the file, conducts investigations and provides advocacy services to claimants at mediation at the Automobile Injury Mediation Office and at adversarial appeal hearings before the Automobile Injury Compensation Appeal Commission. The Claimant Adviser may also negotiate resolutions/settlements with MPIC representatives including Injury Mediation Specialists and Legal Counsel.
