Under the direction of the Area Fire Mananger, the Helitac Officer (FR4) is responsible for the management and organization of the helitac base providing leadership and supervision to Initial Attack Crews on a daily basis. The Helitac Officer (FR4) is responsible for initial attack of wildfires, coordinates, implements and directs wildfire suppression strategies, tactics, training and participates in both provincial and national deployments as and when required.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5 driver's licence.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties required of the job including lifting up to 60 lbs.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends, and be deployed provincially, inter-provincially or internationally.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Experience as a Crew Leader on an Initial Attack Crew.
  • Experience interpreting fire weather, fire behaviour, and implementing wildfire suppression tactics.
  • Experience in fire equipment maintenance and usage.
  • Supervisory experience providing training, guidance and performance management.
  • Knowledge of fire fighting aircraft and their capabilities.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
Desired:
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fire program policy and procedures, operational guidelines and administration practices.
  • Completion of Crew Leader S200 training and any other wildfire suppression courses.
  • Possess valid First Aid/CPR certification.

Duties:
Reporting to the AFM or designate will organize and co-manage the day to day activities and operation of the Paint Lake Initial Attack Fire base. This includes the direct supervision of assigned IA Crews.    Responsible in ensuring the readiness of the IA Crews of the Helitac operation, including manpower, equipment and aircraft resources, as per the regional operating plan. Responsible for ensuring that the Wildfire Program infrastructure is maintained to prevent deterioration of the facilities and are kept in an operational state. Funding for necessary repairs must be approved by the FOM.  Provides on-board, on-site supervision and guidance for IA Crews and helicopter flight Crews.  Plans, organizes and ensures that all members of the IA and Emergency Fire Fighters (EFF) are trained within the provincial and CIFFC standards.
May act as Initial Attack Incident Commander on forest fires. Supervise the maintenance of Fire suppression equipment and ensures equipment is maintained to provincial standards. Maintains records, completes daily Fire regional operating plan, completes Initial Attack Fire reports and prepares other Program reports as required. Primary contact on staff discipline and complete the required employer disciplinary forms. Discuss and make formal employees’ work performance evaluations with subordinates. Ensure subordinates have completed a formal work performance evaluation of their staff within the Fire season.
Ensure staff and the workplace is compliant with all Workplace Health and Safety legislation and practices.  Supervise district work and/or construction projects as required. Make recommendations regarding district/regional Wildfire management objectives and complies data for inclusion in the annual regional report. Acts as a liaison between aircraft contractors and the department. Perform other duties as assigned by the FOM and /or Regional Duty Officer.
