Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources is seeking a qualified and skilled individual to fill the Senior Forest Technician - Timber Administration position in Swan River.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Full Stage Manitoba Class 5 (or higher) Driver’s licence without restrictions.
  • Must possess or acquire at the next available course a Manitoba Scaling Licence.
  • Must possess or acquire at next available course Standard First Aid.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to remote locations within the Province of Manitoba for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position which includes working alone in challenging outdoor weather conditions, being exposed to allergens, snowshoeing and walking 3 to 5 km/day in difficult terrain, and operating all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.  

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Post secondary education in Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Demonstrated experience planning, performing, supervising and inspecting timber operations.
  • Experience in mapping and aerial photo interpretation, including the use of ArcGIS and GPS applications.
  • Experience with data analysis including working with numerical and spatial data.
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize workloads, multi-task, and work on concurrent assignments with strict deadlines.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical and non-technical information to a variety of audiences. 
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders and within a team environment.
Desired:
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation including working with The Forest Act, Regulations, and Guidelines.
  • Experience working and collaborating with Indigenous people and/or communities.  
  • Leadership skills and the ability to supervise staff.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, performing, supervising and inspecting silviculture operations. 
  • Experience in project management.

Duties:
Reporting to the Regional Forester, the Senior Forest Technician - Timber Administration is responsible for the delivery and evaluation of timber administration, timber tracking and timber management projects in the region.  The Senior Forest Technician will be the lead auditor of regional timber operations and the lead regional timber scaler for audit scaling, verification and factor sampling. 

The Senior Forest Technician leads a team of technicians and ensures that timber harvesting is supervised, appropriate practices are employed and timber is tracked.  The position provides liaison and technical support on all aspects of the Forest Act and other associated legislation for enforcement.  The Senior Forest Technician assists the Forester in the development of budget estimates for program delivery and administration of allocated financial resources.
