Northern Airports and Marine Operations acts as the lifeline for remote communities in Northern Manitoba, allowing the transportation of medical patients and essential supplies such as food and medication. Marine Operations provides ferry services to the communities through a highly skilled workforce that adheres to regulatory standards to ensure safety and uniformity with provincial, federal, and international regulations. 

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid Class 5 licence with the ability to upgrade to a Class 3 with training provided.
  • Must be able to handle physical requirements of the job and able to work in confined spaces, and perform work over/around the water and work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours; travel and within the province of Manitoba by ground, water or air transportation and remain at remote work sites for extended periods of time.

Qualifications:
Essential:

  • Knowledge in the operation and basic maintenance of diesel engines, hydraulic equipment and small engine driven equipment such as water pumps and generators.
  • Knowledge of Occupational, Safety, Health & Risk Management policies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal contacts and stakeholders.
  • Clear and concise written communication skills when completing daily diary, field notes, work sheets and/or reports.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with mechanic and hand tools.
Desired:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the administration, staffing, and operation and maintenance of passenger vessel, cable ferries.
  • Knowledge in the maintenance and operation of passenger/vehicle ferries or other marine/airport equipment.

Duties:
The Maintenance Technician completes routine inspection, repair and modification of all passenger/vehicle ferries and related crew quarters, buildings, docks and other ferry landing facilities and the equipment associated with those repairs. Maintenance is performed according to the schedule established by the Department and according to Transport Canada Marine Safety Regulations and any other applicable Provincial Regulations, Policies and Procedures.

As a heavy-duty apprentice or journeyman working in the Marine Division of Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure, we are responsible for the safe maintenance of the province’s fleet of passenger ferries. There are four ferries that are located in remote northern areas of the province, and as such, work must be performed at these locations, and travel, accommodations, and board are provided and required. Trips to these locations are most often done M-F, with the occasional weekend worked. Days can often consist of 12–14-hour workdays.

The Marine Shop location is located in Selkirk and serves as a home base and repair and prep facility when not at remote sites.
